Things to Do in Durham, NC: A Retro-Inspired Weekend Guide

Looking for things to do in Durham, NC, this weekend? Durham makes it easy to turn a quick visit into a full weekend.

Hey there, Woody here! I’m Dogwood Moving Co.’s resident Triangle guide, and I’ve got a retro-inspired Durham itinerary for anyone who likes their plans with a little personality. Whether you’re visiting from out of town or getting to know a city you might soon call home, here’s where I’d start.

Where to Stay in Durham: The Durham Hotel

Make The Durham Hotel your home base. This downtown boutique hotel brings mid-century style into the present without losing what makes the building special. Set your bags down, take in the city from the rooftop, and leave yourself time for a slow breakfast downstairs before you head out. It’s the kind of stay that makes the hotel part of the trip, instead of just the place you sleep.

Where to Eat and Drink in Durham

Your first lunch assignment: Ideal’s Sandwich and Grocery. This East Durham favorite brings a little Northeastern deli energy to North Carolina, with freshly baked bread and sandwiches worth planning around. Go early if you can; when they sell out, that’s that, and it’s typical to see lines out the door.

Across the street you’ll find Pinheiro Vinho e Vida in Old East Durham. This Portuguese wine bar feels welcoming whether you already know your favorite Portuguese grape or want someone to help you find one. Settle in, explore the wine list, and enjoy a place that feels like part of its neighborhood.

For something wonderfully unfussy, stop at Banh’s Cuisine. Their Chinese and Vietnamese dishes have kept people coming back for years, and the counter-service setting lets the food do the talking.

And save a coffee break for Soif. The intimate space has an Art Deco feel, and its inventive espresso drinks make a quick stop feel like an experience. Come for coffee, or circle back later when the mood shifts toward an aperitivo.

Vintage Shopping in Durham

You can’t plan a retro-inspired Durham weekend without vintage shopping. Dolly’s Vintage is full of carefully chosen clothing and playful gifts. It’s the sort of shop where you go in “to look” and come out with something you never knew you needed.

Then head to Durham Vintage Collective for vintage clothing, home goods, and décor from across the decades. If you’ve recently moved, consider this your warning: you may find the perfect piece for that empty corner before you’ve even unpacked the box marked living room.

Durham Nightlife: Pool and Live Music

Start with a game of pool at The Green Room. It’s a Durham hangout with a lived-in, old-school feel that no amount of newly installed vintage wallpaper could imitate. Stay for a round or a couple of hours. They have a massive selection of drinks at affordable prices. The staff is welcoming, meaning you don’t have to be a pro pool shark.

Then follow the music to The Blue Note Grill. It pairs a full restaurant and barbecue menu with live performances. The energy here is unmatched. They have all different shows throughout the year. Check the music calendar, grab a table, and let the band decide when the evening ends.

Thinking About Moving to Durham, NC?

That’s the thing about Durham: a weekend gives you plenty to love and still leaves you curious about what’s next. Wander into a shop you didn’t plan on visiting. Order another coffee. Stay for one more song. The best way to get to know a place is to give it room to surprise you.

If this visit has you picturing a life here, Dogwood Moving Co. can help with the next chapter. Our local movers serve Durham and communities throughout the Triangle, and we’re happy to handle the heavy lifting while you start discovering your new favorite spots.

Until next time,
