I spend plenty of time thinking about new spaces. They usually involve moving boxes, furniture, but every now and then, an entire new corner of Raleigh starts taking shape and the North Hills Innovation District is one worth unpacking.
Located in Midtown Raleigh, the North Hills Innovation District also known as NHID is a growing, technology and entrepreneur-focused district designed around the city’s natural environment. It brings offices, apartments, local businesses, restaurants, fitness studios, public spaces, and greenway connections together in one walkable area.
At the center of it all is Makers Alley, a collection of small retail spaces created for artists, makers, and local independent businesses by local makers themselves. It is colorful, creative, and different from the North Hills many Raleigh residents already know.
And because much of it is still new, it may not be on everyone’s radar just yet.
What Is the North Hills Innovation District?
The North Hills Innovation District is a newer addition to the larger North Hills community in Raleigh, NC. Rather than feeling like a traditional shopping center, NHID has been designed as a mixed-use neighborhood where people can live, work, eat, shop, exercise, and spend time

Bring Home Something Green from Green Rabbit Plants
If your new home has an empty corner that needs a little life, Green Rabbit Plants may have the answer.
This locally owned plant shop specializes in houseplants and planters designed for home living. Whether you already have an indoor jungle or you are trying to keep your very first plant alive, it is an inviting place to browse and find something that fits your space.
Plants are one of the easiest ways to make a new house feel lived in and take it from me, every room could benefit from a little more greenery.

Shop, Sip, and Stay Awhile at Unlikely Professionals
Unlikely Professionals is not easy to place in one category, and that is exactly the point.
It's like if Ralph Lauren had an edgy cousin.
It combines an elevated modern general store, neighborhood bar, gift shop, and workshop-inspired space under one roof. The shelves include apparel, accessories, apothecary products, home goods, books, games, stationery, and plenty of personality-filled gifts. You can browse the latest finds, pick up something distinctly Raleigh or North Carolina, and pull up a stool for a drink while you are there.
It’s retail built around an experience instead of a transaction and one of the clearest examples of the independent spirit Makers Alley was created to support.

Find Gifts for People and Pups at A Lil’ R + R
A Lil’ R + R is a studio and shop filled with cheerful, creative goods for both humans and dogs.
You can browse original Emily Petrilla illustrations alongside apparel, greeting cards, stickers, totes, jewelry, candles, ceramics, self-care items, puzzles, games, dog toys, treats, chews, and pup apparel.

Those four businesses are a great place to begin, but they are only part of what is taking shape across the district.
Makers Alley also includes locally owned shops such as women’s boutique Bofémme, clothing boutique hellbent., Ky’s Kandles, and fashion-rental destination TrenLend. Nearby, Dose Yoga + Cafe combines movement with coffee, smoothies, and a place to recharge.
The wider Innovation District adds even more reasons to visit:
