Downtown Wendell has the type of atmosphere people picture when they think about small-town North Carolina: historic buildings, local businesses, colorful murals, and community events throughout the year.
One fun way to explore is the official Wendell Mural Trail, an interactive outdoor collection of murals painted throughout town.
It's an easy place to spend an afternoon wandering around, supporting local businesses and getting to know the community.
Bearded Bee Brewing Company in Downtown Wendell
If there's one business that perfectly represents the personality of downtown Wendell, it might be Bearded Bee Brewing Company. I obviously approve of anything involving bees.
Located at 20 E. Campen Street, Bearded Bee occupies a restored building that dates back to around 1915 and originally served as the Campen Livery & Stable.
Today, instead of horses, you'll find locally brewed craft beer. I'd call that a pretty successful renovation.
Bearded Bee's story actually started with honeybees. Founder Derek Ayscue began making mead after his apiary produced more honey than he knew what to do with, which eventually grew into homebrewing and, later, the brewery.
The business still maintains that connection today, with a mission centered around brewing great beer, using local ingredients and supporting honeybees and local beekeepers.
But what I really love is how much it feels like a neighborhood gathering place, packed with things like trivia, live music, food trucks, games, and community events.

Parallax Coffee Lab in Downtown Wendell
Then there's Parallax Coffee Lab, another spot helping make downtown Wendell feel like home. It's the coffee version of Cheers where everyone knows your name.
Located at 18 E. Third Street, Parallax brings a completely different vibe to downtown.
It's a specialty coffee shop with an eclectic, creative atmosphere serving coffee from North Carolina's Black & White Coffee Roasters, along with espresso drinks, matcha, and other specialty drinks.
There's plenty of space to settle in, so you'll often see people working on laptops, meeting friends or just hanging out with a coffee for a while.
I think businesses like Parallax say a lot about where Wendell is heading.
You still have the charm and historic buildings of a small North Carolina town, but now you're starting to find the kinds of independent coffee shops, breweries and gathering spaces that people might normally expect to drive into Raleigh to find.
That's a pretty great combination.
Robertson Millpond Preserve: Outdoor Recreation Near Wendell, NC
One of the things I love about Wendell is how quickly you can go from new neighborhoods and development to somewhere that feels completely removed from it all.
Robertson Millpond Preserve is a perfect example.
This 85-acre Wake County nature preserve surrounds a historic millpond and offers one of the area's most unique paddling experiences.
You can explore Robertson Millpond by kayak or canoe, and it's one of those places that makes you stop and realize how much nature is still tucked away on this side of Wake County.
The preserve is especially unique because of its blackwater swamp and bald cypress habitat, something you might expect to find much farther east in North Carolina.
Whether you're kayaking, canoeing or simply looking for somewhere peaceful to spend some time outdoors, it's absolutely worth knowing about if you're considering moving to Wendell.
Why Wendell Falls Is Driving Growth in Wendell, NC
Of course, you can't really talk about Wendell's growth without mentioning Wendell Falls.
The large master-planned community has helped transform this part of eastern Wake County, bringing thousands of homes along with trails, parks, amenities, businesses and restaurants.
And it's still evolving.
Wendell Falls was designed to be more than a collection of houses. The community includes 10+ miles of trails, pools, parks, playgrounds, fitness spaces and gathering areas, plus commercial development that gives residents more places to eat, shop and spend time close to home.
