New to Raleigh? Spots you need to know

New to Raleigh? Spots you need to know

So you’re new to Raleigh.

First of all, welcome, you beautiful fresh transplant.

I’m Woody, your unofficial welcome committee, part local mascot, part moving-day hype flower, part self proclaimed guru for Dogwood Moving Co., helping you discover all there is to know about this incredible city you now call home.

Around here, our moving team helps people get settled all across Raleigh and the Triangle without turning moving day into an event sponsored by back pain, so you can focus on the fun stuff like getting to know your new city.

Raleigh is lively, a little nerdy, a little artsy, and growing faster than weeds after a pollen storm. Don’t know what a pollen storm is?! Wait until spring…you’ll understand.

Raleigh has that capital-city zest, while still feeling like a small town, it has college sport fever, the best doctors to deal with any other fevers, greenways galore, incredible food scene, traffic that taunts you, and people who make the city feel less like a place you moved to…and more like a place you belong.

So whether you just moved to Raleigh, you’re relocating soon, or you’re still deciding where to plant your roots, consider this your “Raleigh Starter Pack”. The places you need to know when you’re trying to feel less like a visitor and more like a local.

Downtown Raleigh: A Must-Know Area for New Residents

If you’re new to Raleigh, start downtown.

Downtown Raleigh is the heart of the city. You’ll find museums, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, murals, office buildings, historic spots, festivals, and my personal favorite…luscious parks.

Downtown is like a sampler platter.

Fayetteville Street: This is where Raleigh tries really hard to convince you it is truly a capital city. With government buildings, restaurants, events, and a skyline.

The Warehouse District: It brings a creative edge with art, food, nightlife, and an atmosphere that knows how cool it is.

Glenwood South: This is Raleigh’s nightlife zone. If you go here on a Friday night expecting a quiet evening with herbal tea, I would be questioning all your life’s choices. Glenwood could be a synonym for high-energy!

Downtown is a great first stop because it gives you the Raleigh highlight reel.

Here are some of my personal favorite picks for exploring downtown:

North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences

A downtown classic and one of the best first stops for new Raleigh residents, especially families. It’s big, and FREE to explore in most areas, other than special exhibits. Full of science, fossils, wildlife exhibits, and dinosaurs ... .and if the new Netflix documentary, “The Dinosaurs” taught us anything, it’s that no matter what age we are…we are still and most definitely always will be interested in dinosaurs.

Moore Square Park

This is a great place for a “stroll in the park” pun intended, but it’s also a great spot for a casual bite or just sitting outside and photosynthesising…or “taking in the rays, as you humans would say.

Sir Walter Coffee

A downtown Raleigh staple with coffee, tea, light bites, and evening drink options, Sir Walter Coffee is perfect for coffee now and a cocktail later type crowd. And listen, I need you to know, now that you live in Raleigh, there are a few unofficial local requirements: you have to complain about traffic at least once a week, develop a strong opinion about pollen, and drink coffee from Sir Walter’s himself. It’s practically civic duty with espresso.

Gringo A Go Go

Locals already know Gringo A Go Go is a good move and now you do too. It’is one of those downtown spots that is tucked away. It's colorful, lively, knows what it’s about, has menu items for everyone (even vegan chorizo tacos) and the margaritas speak for themselves…or maybe I had one too many and thought they could speak…either way, the message is clear: Gingo A Go Go is always a good choice.

Food Halls: Because Nobody in Your Group Can Agree

Food halls are a gift to new residents.

When you’ve just moved, you don’t always know where to eat. You might be with family, roommates, coworkers, or friends who all want different things.

That’s why you need to know about Transfer Co. Food Hall and Morgan Street Food Hall.

They’re casual, flexible, and full of options. Great for groups. Great for visitors. Perfect for those first nights in Raleigh when even though our team has already unpacked your kitchen, you’re still not emotionally ready to try your stove out yet.

Now let's start exploring a little further past downtown:

Pullen Park: Raleigh’s Sweet Little Time Machine

Pullen Park is classic Raleigh.

It’s charming, historic, family-friendly, and has that wholesome feel that makes you want to call your Grandma.

Located near NC State, Pullen Park is great for families, picnics, walking, its iconic train and carousel, playground time, and low-pressure exploring. If you’re moving to Raleigh with kids, put this one high on your list.

Raleigh Greenways: The Best Trails to Explore When You’re New Here

One of the best things you can do when you move to Raleigh is find your closest greenway entrance. Seriously. Find it. Cherish it. Whisper “thank you” to it.

Raleigh’s greenway system connects parks, neighborhoods, creeks, lakes, and trails all across the city. It is like the city’s own root system. It’s where you’ll see runners, cyclists, walkers, strollers, dogs, and that one guy who loves shouting “on your left” because he watched Captain America just one too many times.

A few good places to start:

Lake Johnson Park

Shelley Lake Park

Neuse River Trail

Explore the North Carolina Museum of Art

The North Carolina Museum of Art is one of Raleigh’s best all-purpose spots.

Art inside, trails all around, open space, rotating exhibits and sculptures outside. It’s perfect for first dates, families with kids needing to burn off some energy, or solo wanderers looking for inspiration to start writing that next poem.

North Hills Raleigh: A Convenient Spot for Shopping, Dining, and Everyday Needs

North Hills is one of Raleigh’s major mixed-use areas. It has shopping, restaurants, apartments, offices, fitness studios, entertainment, and plenty of brunch spots.

If downtown is Raleigh’s welcome mat, North Hills is the living room.

It’s a great area to know if you like convenience. Dinner, errands, groceries, shopping, and events all in one spot.

Visit the State Farmers Market in Raleigh for Local Produce, Plants, and Flowers

If you are new here, get ready for people asking “Have you been to the Farmers Market yet?”, I recommend getting ahead of the curve while you can.

The State Farmers Market is one of the most Raleigh places you can go, it’s a staple.

You’ll find local artisans, fruits, vegetables, plants, flowers, coffee, pastries, local goods, seasonal treats, and more.

This is a great stop for making Raleigh feel like home. So go ahead and buy that plant and if you need a name for that new plant…I hear Dogwood is a great one.

Best Places for Sports and Concerts in Raleigh, NC

Raleigh loves a good event. Hockey, concerts, college sports, festivals. We will gather. We will cheer. We will create traffic jams.

A few places to know:

Lenovo Center

Home to the NHL Carolina Hurricanes games, NC State basketball, and major concerts.

Carter-Finley Stadium

NC State football, game-day hype, and concerts

Red Hat Amphitheater

Downtown concerts with skyline views

Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek

A major outdoor concert venue in East Raleigh
